LEGO Minifigures Series 28 Review: A Brilliant Animal-Themed Comeback

In this LEGO Minifigures Series 28 Review, I’m breaking down all 12 animal costume characters and figuring out whether this is one of the strongest Collectible Minifigures waves we’ve had in years.

Lately, I’ve felt like some Minifigure series have struggled with identity. You’ll get a futuristic space warrior standing next to a retro singer next to a medieval villager.. while individually cool, the lineups often feels really random. If you’re buying blind boxes, that randomness can make it harder to feel excited about every pull.

That’s why Series 28 feels like such a refreshing shift.

Animal costumes. That’s it. No confusion. No guessing the theme. Just colorful, expressive animal characters that clearly belong together. The moment you see the full lineup, it makes sense — and honestly, that clarity alone already makes this wave more satisfying than all the recent ones.

Spring Vibes and Cohesive Design

This whole series gives me spring and easter vibes. The packaging colors are soft with the top half of the package in light blue which feels like of the sky, and the bottom half has bright greens that feel like grass.

Each figure also comes with a small flat green display base that looks like a grass base. When you line them up together, everything matches. The whole collection feels cohesive.

1) Bunny Costume

I’ll start with the Bunny Costume Girl since she really captures the spring vibe of this series. The rounded hood and tall bunny ears make her one of my personal cutest in the lineup. The white fur printing on the torso adds some perceived softness to her, and the wink with the egg and basket gives her a playful personality, it looks like she just won an Easter egg hunt.

That said, I am not too big a fan of the suit color. It sits somewhere between the color of sand and a diluted latte, which feels quite dull. With rabbits being an animal that comes with so many possible colors, this one feels slightly less exciting than it could have been.

Rating: B

2) Koala Costume

The Koala Costume leans heavily into the classic lazy/sleepy koala stereotype, and It works so well. The big rounded headpiece and big ears gives it a soft teddy bear like cuddly feel, and the included boomerang immediately adds that Australian touch if the Koala itself wasn’t enough.

One of my favorite small details is the alternate face where he looks like he is about to fall asleep. It again fits with the lazy and sleepy personality koalas are known for, and the classic grey color scheme is simple and accurate, so while it is not the most flashy figure in the wave, it feels very on theme and well thought out.

Rating: A

3) Parrot Costume

The Parrot Costume is the most vibrant and epic looking figures in the series. The feather printing on the front looks great, and I the matching arm prints are so stylish, which make the wings feel complete. The two fabric tail layer piece at the back is a nice touch too thats unique to LEGO minifigures, giving it a bit of flappable like movement instead of just being a static suit.

The eyeshadow detail adds extra personality to the face too, and the little bird food box accessory is a decent addition that fits the figure well. A small issue is that the back of the stomach feels just empty compared to the front with no feather like detials. Still, it is a colorful and well executed design overall.

Rating: A

4) Peacock Costume

The Peacock Costume is super awesome from start to finish, The large seashell-shaped feather piece at the back immediately makes it stand out more than other sets, and the blue color choice is a great contrast to the brighter Parrot out of the two birds this collection.

The torso printing is simple but nice, with feather details wrapping nicely along both sides of the stomach. The overall body color scheme feels rich and balanced, and both available facial expressions capture that proud, personality peacocks are often associated with. The sunflower accessory is also a simple but fitting addition, especially since peacocks are often found around farms where seeds like sunflower seeds are common. Altogether, this one feels detailed, confident, and very well executed.

5) Lion Costume

The Lion Costume goes for a bold and confident look to match the lion’s aura, and I think it pulls it off well in a cute way. The large mane headpiece gives it a strong presence, with those angry looking eyes and four teeth at each corner almost making it look like it is biting the minifigure’s face off. It is kind of funny, especially when paired with the minifigure’s slightly pained expression underneath.

The printed fur details on both the head and torso help break up the classic orange-brown lion color nicely, and it makes the figure feel like one of the main standout pieces of the pack, just like how lions are seen as the alpha animals of the jungle.

The alternate facial expression works great as well, giving off that proud, king of the jungle look lions are known for. The long simple tail and stick of meat accessory add to the carnivorous feel (and the stick of meat might even make your Luffy minifigure jealous). It does not have the most complex accessories, but the overall silhouette and character carry it easily.

Rating: A

6) Monkey Costume

The Monkey Costume gives off playful, slightly naughty energy. The two facial expressions really sell it. One is a silly tongue-out face that looks like it is teasing someone, and the other is a smile with a bandage, like it just got hurt doing something mischievous. The chocolate brown color paired with the lighter caramel stomach detail keeps it from looking too plain, and the simple monkey headpiece with the three spiky hairs adds to that cheeky vibe. Oh, and the tall tail makes me imagine he is about to whip someone and then claim it was not him.

The banana accessory is a perfect and classic prop for a monkey. That said, a peeled banana might have pushed the mischievous personality even further and added a bit more play value. It is not as visually dramatic as the Lion or Peacock, but it has a fun and energetic charm that fits the series nicely.

Rating: B

7) Cat Costume

The Cat comes in fluffy white with the biggest wide eyes of wonder and soft fur detailing along the sides and stomach. The fluffy tail and the pink heart collar make it feel extra cuddly, and I like that the nose and the pink yarn ball accessory match in tone. It is neither the flashiest, nor most colorful figure in the collection, but it definitely leans into that cute factor.

Personality wise, this one feels naughty, but in a sly way. The crooked smile look she gives feels like she is silently saying, “I can knock this item off your table, you know ;)”. The other side of her face reveals a sleepy smile like shes enjoying the warmth of her own fur to get in a quick nap. No crazy extra parts or dramatic back pieces, just a clean suit with sharp ears and whisker printing that does the job. Simple, full of attitude, and carried heavily by expression.

Rating: B

8) Dog Costume

The Dalmatian Dog looks like the minifigure having the most fun in the entire lineup. The bright white suit covered in bold black spots makes it an instant standout, and the scattered pattern somehow matches his bouncing-off-the-walls energy, like he is always mid-sprint chasing a frisbee.

One face gives a confident smirk, while the other shows an exhausted but happy pant, like he is tired from playing but still not ready to stop. The floppy ears and sideways tail really sell that energetic puppy vibe. It almost feels like he is staring at you saying, “Throw it again.”

There is just something about the high contrast black and white that works. It is simple, but it pops harder than some of the more detailed figures in the wave. Loud, playful, and hard to miss.

9) Dolphin Costume

The Dolphin Costume feels basic compared to the other animals in this collection. The overall shape is clean, and I do like the small wavy tail and the way the arms curve slightly to resemble fins. Also, the cloud blue and light blue stomach combo do work well to give her that soft ocean feel.

That said, I am not sold on the pink goggles on the front face. The color feels slightly off compared to the rest of the suit, and it does not blend as naturally with the blue tones. The alternate face with the calm smile looks much better in my opinion. Considering dolphins are known as one of the most intelligent mammals, I kind of wish they did something a bit more clever or expressive here.

The clam accessory is a nice touch though. It can open and close, and the transparent gem inside has matching colors with the dolphin’s skin. It adds a bit of fun value that the main costume itself lacks.

Rating: C

10) Goldfish Costume

The Goldfish Costume just gives happy and pure energy. The golden-orange mask with the properly sized fish shape and that tail sticking out at the very back is awesome, It really looks like a full fish wrapped around the minifigure instead of just a helmet slapped on top. The shaping feels more than complete.

The little puckered lips on the front face are such a fun touch. Both facial expressions lean fully into that cutesy vibe with blushy cheeks and soft smiles, She seems to just be happy to be there. The scale printing on the stomach and legs is clean, and the fin color contrast between the warmer orange body and the yellow-gold accents works really well. It pops without being messy.

The fish food accessory isok i guess. It fits neatly onto the green base stud, so it works display-wise, but it is not the most exciting prop in the world.

She is not loud like the Dalmatian or dramatic like the Lion. She is just cute, but that’s enough!

Rating: A

11) Frog Costume

The Frog Costume fully commits to a bubble theme, and I love that about it. The light green body paired with the darker greenbubble like circle prints on the figure’s back, sleeves, legs, and even the toes. They creates such a satisfying contrast while at no point looking or feels messy. Instead, it ties the whole design together in a fun, cohesive way.

Both facial expressions are spot on. One has a big cheerful smile with those bubble-like dimples, while the other puffs his cheeks like he is about to blow the biggest bubble ever. And of course, the bubble blower accessory as well as the bubble soap cyclinder seals the deal.

This one just feels fun. Bright, playful, and packed with personality. I can easily see this being a fan favorite with kids, and honestly adults like me too.

Rating: A+

12) Crocodile Costume

The Crocodile Costume immediately stands out. It has some awesome head sculpt packed with sharp teeth (3x more than the Lion figure) and actually looks menacing. The shape of the snout and the rows of teeth give it that classic swamp predator look.

Moving down the body, the lime green stomach printing with subtle line details contrasts nicely against the darker green suit. It keeps the torso area from feeling flat. The clawed feet and those eerie circular knee details add texture and give it some of that rough, reptile vibe.

Then you get to the back, where the long spiky tail runs all the way down. It almost looks like a tiny staircase and really elevates the silhouette. It makes the figure feel dynamic from the sides and back too, instead of just front-facing.

The accessories add a fun twist. She’s holding a life preserver like she just found it floating in a lake, along with a little duck she seems to be casually playing with  (maybe she’s saving it for lunch)

The best contrast though is the minifigure face. Under all those teeth, she has a simple sideways smile with lipstick on one side and a wink on the other. It’s cute and confident, which balances out the otherwise intimidating costume perfectly.

Final Thoughts - Is LEGO Minifigures Series 28 Worth Collecting?

After going through every figure in this LEGO Minifigures Series 28 Review, I can confidently say this wave succeeds because it commits fully to its theme.

Not every minifigure is equally strong, the Dolphin feels safe, and a couple accessories could have been pushed further – but the overall cohesion carries the entire lineup. From the bold Lion and dramatic Peacock to the chaotic Dalmatian and bubbly Frog, there’s lots of personality baked into every costume.

And that’s what makes this series work.

If you like animal costumes even a little bit, this is one of those CMF waves where you can buy blind with confidence.
